the pianist rediscovered
her in a pond of keybed
he'd given up hope but
found in felt hammers
her weight, her resistance,
her warm tension
he recalled New England woods
where muffled fugues
ricocheted off pines
and breeze-wafted ballades
sank into sun-splashed lawns
harmony resurges
in a moment's
augmented overtone
then vanishes
into that entreating,
diminished sound
of long ago
into that entreating,
diminished sound
of long ago
